Community Organizer, Dailan J. Long, and PhD Candidate in Anthropology (University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill), Dana Powell, will discuss their experiences and research as part of the Navajo grassroots movement against the proposed Desert Rock Energy Project on the Navajo Nation. Desert Rock is a microcosm of global debates and the grassroots effort to counteract an obsolete energy paradigm is thrust forth with community member initiating prescriptive blueprints for renewable energy development on tribal lands. Long and Powell will discuss the often overlooked aspects of indigenous non-profits and the ground organizing that is taking place in rural Native communities to confront contemporary issues.

Dailan J. Long is a Navajo grassroots Community Organizer in Burnham, New Mexico, whose rural Navajo community faces the proposed Desert Rock Energy Project, a coal plant that would be located by an expanding coal mine in the Four Corners region. Long will discuss the grassroots efforts to not only counteract Desert Rock but how the opportunities presented by the climate change discussions reflect Navajo cultural values of sustainability and utilizing natural energies. Tribal members are pioneering efforts to provide blueprints for renewable energy development on Navajo lands.

The Blackstone Group has an 80% ownership stake in Sithe Global LLC whose objective is to construct the proposed Desert Rock Energy Project in Burnham, New Mexico on Navajo Nation lands in the Four Corners region. Carbon taxes and legislation are inevitable, according to the Wall Street Journal, and several Banks investing in coal plants have withdrawn financial investments in coal projects across the country due to potential liabilities associated with large carbon emitters. Diné CARE will hold a non-violent public demonstration at Blackstone headquarters following their presentation at the UN Indigenous Forum.
